Allen originally wrote Play it again, Sam as a play. It opened at the Broadhurst on 12 Februrary 1969. The main actors were Allen (as Allan Felix) and Diane Keaton (as Linda Christie). This was how they first met. They also starred as the main characters in the movie later on. When the play opened on Broadway, they had become lovers. There were 453 performances of the play on Broadway. It closed, on Broadway, the 14th of March 1970. Then Allen and Keaton stopped living together. In the theater Allen once checked out how many laughs he got over the night. The result was: 69 in the first act, 60 in the second (it was five minutes shorter) and 26 in the last act. Total laughs: 155. For years it was the eleventh most popular play on the American amateur stage. Since 1969 it has been translated to numorous languages, even Icelandic. The first time the play was shown in London, Allan Felix was played by Dudley Moore. In the movie, Dustin Hoffman was suggested to play Felix. Allen wanted to repeat his stage role on film, but nobody believed Allen’s name would draw crowds. When Bananas started doing well, people began having second thoughts on Allen’s apperance in the film. |
